J.D. Escola was born in Hayward, California on December 3, 1967 and spent their early years in the Bay Area of Northern California. While living with their family in Japan in the early 1980s, J received their first formal instruction from a working artist. They learned film photography, figurative drawing and sculpture. J founded Atelier D’Escola in 2020 as a vehicle to share their creativity, art making, service and collaboration.

 

Process: The work is created as a meditative practice, the action of creating being primary, content and technique being secondary. The work is intended to be interesting and decorative rather than conceptual or academic. Film and digital photography, printmaking, drawing, hand coloring, collage and mail art. Enhancing and reworking original photographs, commercial advertising and different papers and using accessible materials: ink pens, calligraphy brushes, watercolor, stickers, wood blocks, found objects, paint and highlighters.
